CHIANG MAI, THAILAND (1 February 2018) — Environment ministers from the six countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion endorsed a 5-year environment agenda that includes more than $540 million worth of priority projects to spur green investments and increase environmental cooperation to help the subregion achieve sustainable growth.

Agriculture accounts for more than half the workforce in most ADB developing member countries. In the Greater Mekong Subregion, agriculture forms the backbone of its countries’ economies, directly supporting the livelihoods of nearly 200 million people with over 60% of the subregion’s 340 million inhabitants engaged in small-scale agriculture. 

An initiative funded by Switzerland and the United States is proposing to enhance regional cooperation in sustainable energy development to protect Viet Nam’s Mekong Delta from rising sea levels and other climate risks.

A study examines how India can increase its trade and investments in the Greater Mekong Subregion by helping small and medium-size enterprises tap into this market.

OSAKA, JAPAN (29 June 2019) — Asian Development Bank President Takehiko Nakao today met with Viet Nam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Osaka. 

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have identified 19 priority infrastructure projects to enhance regional connectivity and mobilize investments. Fifteen of the projects are in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

Viet Nam has switched on a 330-megawatt solar farm in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan, which makes it one of the largest solar farms in Southeast Asia. It is expected to generate 545 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

The Government of Viet Nam and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed in March a $188 million loan to improve 198 kilometers of roads in northwestern provinces.

An international seaport project in Southern Cambodia will serve as a gateway for direct ferry services to Viet Nam and later to other destinations in the Gulf of Thailand. The fast ferry services are expected to boost tourism in the Southern Coastal Subcorridor of the Greater Mekong Subregion.

HA NOI, VIET NAM (12 December 2018) — The Asian Development Bank has approved a $188 million loan to improve and upgrade 198 kilometers of roads in Viet Nam’s mountainous northwest region, which has the highest poverty rate in the country.
