GMS-2030 promotes inclusive digitalization and the use of advanced technologies in all GMS Program activities and projects. With COVID-19 acting as a catalyst in the digital transformation of GMS countries, digital readiness to date has successfully played a crucial role in some GMS countries in efforts to contain the virus. It also has provided some countries the potential to maintain a relatively open economy during the pandemic. GMS-2030 focuses on digitalization in the transport, energy, agriculture, tourism, and health sectors as well as on other areas such as trade, smart cities and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), while exploring new areas, such as e-commerce and telecommunications.

On e-commerce, GMS-2030 encourages subregional digital entrepreneurship in micro-, small and medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). E-commerce has been shown to be a particularly powerful enabler of MSME growth. The GMS-2030 promotes peer learning and the exchanges of experiences through subregional forums and conferences
