Germany Funds Transboundary Management of Mekong Basin

The German government is supporting two projects between Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), and between Cambodia and Thailand to better manage resources in the Mekong River basin and address flood and drought issues.

The Mekong River Commission announced the two projects at a recent meeting in Vientiane, the Lao PDR’s capital and largest city.

Germany’s international development agency GIZ funds the two projects, which will initially run from April 2018 to March 2010. The projects focus on transboundary development planning of water resources management in the Khone Falls region between Cambodia and the Lao PDR, including monitoring of environmental impacts from the Don Sahong project; and joint assessment and planning for flood and drought management in the border areas of Cambodia and Thailand, which suffer from frequent flooding.
