Lao PDR, Viet Nam Reiterate Commitment to Deepen Ties

Lao PDR President Thongloun Sisoulith congratulated newly-elected Viet Nam President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc in a telephone conversation on 5 April. The two leaders reiterated their commitment to work closely and deepen their bilateral relations. They recalled how past cooperation enabled the implementation of various agreements. They also expressed satisfaction with the implementation of agreements reached at the 43rd session of the Laos-Vietnam Inter-Governmental Committee held in 2020.  They discussed future cooperation, which will include exchange visits by high-level delegations and continuous monitoring for the implementation of agreements signed. Viet Nam is the third largest foreign investor in Lao PDR.

Lao PDR and Viet Nam are both members of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program. The GMS Program is supported by ADB through the TA “Sustaining the Gains of Regional Cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion,” which aims to help countries in the GMS transform the Program into a more effective regional cooperation platform that adds value to member countries' national development strategies and benefits local populations.
